Gustnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3926416932805183400.post-5537826190493462132010-06-19T23:51:04.000+02:002010-06-19T23:51:04.000+02:00In that case, you're welcome. It seems the information I was given was uncorrect - though it must be said that the guy with whom I spoke had indeed sojourned in a university town.
Here in Italy we tend to think that the Nordic countries in general, and the Netherlands in particular, are almost bilingual with regards to English.marconoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3926416932805183400.post-32153615976665246342010-06-12T16:53:26.000+02:002010-06-12T16:53:26.000+02:00Marco, to answer your last question first: yes, th...Marco, to answer your last question first: yes, the price of English translations is definitely lower, the quality is usually (but not always) superior and the range available in English seems greater - although I am not entirely sure about that. English translations are definitely a lot cheaper: one volume of Proust's A la recherche du temps perdu in Dutch costs almost as much the whole set in English. You do get a beautiful hardcover for that price, but I am perfectly happy with a paperback.

As for the amount of English read in the original language in the Netherlands: it's predominantly the people with a university degree who routinely read English books in the original. Most other readers make do with a translation. You get a decent choice of books in English in university towns, but bookshops in the rest of the country usually carry very few books in English if any. And then they are 99% beststellers.
We do however read a lot more books from across our borders than for instance American readers, even if we do read them in translation. Our bookshops have a much more cosmopolitan feel than American bookshops. I am not sure about the UK, because I have not been there for ages, but I don't think they sell that many books from outside the Anglophone world either.Annanoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3926416932805183400.post-74619002613237831362010-06-11T23:11:11.000+02:002010-06-11T23:11:11.000+02:00Anna, I have read that you have studied English an...Anna, I have read that you have studied English and aren't much interested in Dutch Literature, but I've noticed you also tend to read "Third Language" classics in English translation.
I'm curious about this, because I recently had a discussion about different translation patterns in various countries.
I have heard that in the Netherlands bookshops offer more books in English than in Dutch, the average Dutch person can freely read the originals, and therefore translations from English are pretty much limited to best-sellers.
Is this true?
Regarding other literatures, is the range of translations available in English greater than in Dutch, the price lower, or do you feel the quality of translations is generally superior?marconoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3926416932805183400.post-71436120685530087212010-06-09T07:53:22.000+02:002010-06-09T07:53:22.000+02:00You know, Stewart, it was actually your review tha...You know, Stewart, it was actually your review that made me buy this book a little over two years ago.
